Though the Chicago-based Wedding Dress is the rock steady collaboration between Erin Elders of Maps & Atlases and Mike Russell of Suns, Mike’s tapped two other Sunheads (Clint Weber and Matt Lemke) to make the thing seem total Suns side project. Bobby Burg is fifth man.
Wedding Dress is sublime, really. All but prereq from a pile of Suns guys.
I’m less familiar with M&A than I am Suns, and so I more readily discerned Suns’ gentle influence. The start tacked onto “Dangerous Living” is meaty and substantial. It sticks to the ribs like a Suns intro. I like those drums.
Wedding Dress doesn’t reach the epic highs that Suns does, but I don’t think Wedding is grasping in that direction. It’s a soulful rock. A kind of funk, even, in “Old Time Thorns.”
